The Nikon NIKKOR-Q Auto 135mm f/2.8 is a classic manual-focus telephoto prime from Nikon's pre-Ai era. Its fast f/2.8 aperture and solid all-metal construction made it a popular portrait and general telephoto lens for Nikon F and Nikkormat users.

The lens delivers sharp, contrasty images with a gentle vintage character. At f/2.8, backgrounds fall away smoothly, isolating subjects beautifully, while stopping down brings crisp detail across the frame. The "Q" designation refers to its four-group optical layout, part of Nikon's classic lens naming system.

Its all-metal barrel, smooth focusing helicoid and precise aperture ring reflect the durability of 1960s and 1970s Nikon manufacturing. It feels dense and reassuring in the hand, built to be used for decades.

The 135mm focal length provides flattering compression for portraits and allows a comfortable working distance from your subject. The f/2.8 aperture gives a bright viewfinder image and helps in lower light.

It excels at head-and-shoulders portraiture, candid street photography from a distance, stage and event shooting, and isolating details in landscapes and travel scenes.

As a non-Ai lens, it is best suited to Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat FTn and other bodies that accept non-Ai lenses, or to cameras with a folding Ai tab. It is especially popular on mirrorless cameras such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z and Micro Four Thirds via a simple F-mount adapter, where its rendering shines.

Today, vintage Nikkor telephotos like this remain valued for their character, robust build, and affordability compared with modern fast telephoto lenses.

We recommend this lens to portrait enthusiasts, vintage Nikon shooters and mirrorless users seeking a characterful, fast telephoto with genuine Nikon heritage.
