Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon Nikomat FT is the original model in Nikon's Nikomat line, the Japanese-market name for the cameras sold elsewhere as Nikkormat. Introduced in 1965, it offered Nikon quality and full compatibility with Nikkor lenses in a more affordable body than the professional Nikon F, and it quickly earned a reputation for toughness.

The FT is a fully mechanical camera with a Copal Square metal focal-plane shutter running from 1 second to 1/1000 sec plus Bulb. Because the shutter operates without batteries, the camera remains usable even if the meter battery is removed.

Its TTL match-needle meter measures at full aperture with Nikkor lenses that have the meter coupling prong. The needle is visible both in the viewfinder and on the top plate, making exposure setting simple and intuitive.

The camera's handling is distinctive, with the shutter speed ring located around the lens mount. Its heavy-duty metal body feels exceptionally solid and was built to withstand years of hard use.

The Nikomat FT is ideal for street, documentary, travel, and everyday photography, as well as for anyone who wants a dependable mechanical camera that teaches the fundamentals of manual exposure.

The camera accepts the vast range of non-Ai Nikkor lenses, many of which are excellent and affordable today. Ai and Ai-S lenses can also be used with metering when fitted with a meter coupling prong.

Vintage Nikomat cameras are valued for their rugged build and classic Nikon character, offering a genuine professional-era shooting experience at an accessible level.

If you want a sturdy, mechanical Nikon SLR with real historical character, the Nikon Nikomat FT is a dependable and rewarding choice.
