Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

This outfit pairs the Nikon FE, one of the most popular Nikon film SLRs ever made, with the classic NIKKOR-S Auto 50mm f/1.4 standard lens. Together they form a compact, capable and highly enjoyable 35mm kit that combines convenient aperture-priority automation with the timeless rendering of a fast Nikkor prime.

Introduced in 1978, the Nikon FE offers aperture-priority automatic exposure with stepless shutter speeds from 8 seconds to 1/1000 sec, as well as full manual control. Its match-needle viewfinder display and aperture readout keep all key information visible, and exposure compensation and AE lock give precise control over tricky lighting.

The FE is compact, well balanced and solidly built, with smooth controls and a reassuring feel that has made it a long-time favourite. A mechanical M90 setting allows the shutter to fire at 1/90 sec without battery power, and the camera accepts interchangeable focusing screens.

The NIKKOR-S Auto 50mm f/1.4 is a classic fast standard lens from Nikon's non-Ai era. With a 7-element, 5-group design, it delivers sharp results when stopped down and a soft, characterful glow with smooth background blur at wider apertures. Its bright f/1.4 aperture is excellent for low light and makes focusing through the viewfinder easy.

The FE's meter coupling lever can be folded up so that non-Ai lenses such as this one can be mounted safely; in that configuration, exposure is metered using the stop-down method. The FE is also fully compatible with Ai and Ai-S Nikkor lenses for full-aperture metering, giving you a wide choice of lenses as your kit grows.

This kit is ideal for street photography, portraits, travel and everyday documentary work. The 50mm focal length offers a natural perspective, while the fast aperture allows creative control over depth of field and shooting in available light.

The Nikon FE remains highly valued for its reliability, compact size and practical automation, while vintage f/1.4 Nikkors are prized for their character and build quality. The lens can also be adapted to modern mirrorless cameras with a Nikon F adapter for use on digital bodies.

If you are looking for a classic Nikon 35mm outfit that is ready to shoot, this Nikon FE with NIKKOR-S Auto 50mm f/1.4 is a wonderful choice. It is a timeless combination that will reward both new and experienced film photographers.
