The Nikon Micro-NIKKOR-P.C Auto 55mm f/3.5 is a classic manual-focus macro lens with a legendary reputation for sharpness. The 'P' indicates a 5-element design, and the 'C' denotes Nikon's multi-coating, which was introduced on this lens to improve contrast and flare resistance. It is one of the most respected close-up lenses of the film era.

Optically, the Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 is renowned for extremely high resolution, very low distortion and a flat field of focus. This makes it ideal not only for macro photography but also for copying documents, photographing artwork and digitising film negatives and slides with outstanding precision.

The lens focuses continuously down to 1:2 (half life-size) magnification and can reach 1:1 with the matching M2 extension ring. A compensating aperture mechanism helps maintain exposure as the lens extends for close-up work, a clever feature for its time.

Built with Nikon's classic all-metal construction, the lens has a long, smooth focusing helicoid that allows very precise adjustment. Engraved reproduction ratio markings make it easy to work at specific magnifications.

Beyond macro work, it is also a superb, sharp standard lens for landscapes, product photography and everyday shooting, offering a natural 55mm perspective with exceptional detail when stopped down.

As a Non-Ai lens, it is best suited to cameras designed for pre-Ai lenses, such as the Nikon F, F2 (with non-Ai finders), Nikkormat FTn and Nikomat EL, and to bodies with a fold-up meter coupling lever such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and Df. It should not be mounted on cameras with a fixed Ai coupling tab unless it has been Ai-converted. On mirrorless cameras, it adapts easily with a Nikon F adapter, and focus peaking and magnification make critical macro focusing simple.

The Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 remains in demand today because it delivers outstanding sharpness and versatility at an accessible level, making it one of the best-value vintage macro lenses available.

If you are looking for a precise, beautifully built macro lens for film or adapted digital photography, the Micro-NIKKOR-P.C Auto 55mm f/3.5 is an excellent choice.
