The Nikon Series E Zoom 70-210mm f/4 is widely regarded as the finest lens of Nikon's Series E line and one of the hidden gems of the manual-focus Nikon system. Although Series E lenses were designed as more affordable companions to cameras such as the EM and FG, this telephoto zoom earned a reputation for optical performance that rivals many more expensive Nikkors. It is a lens that consistently surprises those who try it.

Its 13-element, 9-group design produces sharp, contrasty images with lovely colour throughout the zoom range. The constant f/4 maximum aperture is unusually bright for a vintage 70-210mm zoom, helping with focusing in dim light and giving smooth, attractive background blur. The macro mode adds close-up capability, making it a remarkably versatile optic. The overall look is balanced and natural, making it easy to achieve pleasing results straight out of the camera.

Handling follows Nikon's one-touch push-pull design, with zooming and focusing combined in one ring for fast, intuitive operation. The lens is solidly built with a metal mount and a reassuringly smooth focus and zoom action. Its Ai-S coupling provides full compatibility with Nikon manual-focus bodies, including program and shutter-priority modes on the FG and FA. Careful design and precise manufacturing give it a feeling of quality that is immediately apparent in the hand.

The 70-210mm range is perfect for portraits, candid street photography, sports, wildlife in parks and zoos, and landscape detail work. The macro setting extends its usefulness to flowers, insects and small objects, so a single lens can cover a surprising amount of ground on a day out. It is an ideal all-round telephoto for travel and general photography.

Thanks to the Nikon F mount, this lens remains remarkably versatile. It mounts directly on Nikon manual-focus film bodies such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and F3, and on many Nikon DSLRs; higher-end models such as the D7000 series, D300 series, D700, D800 series and Df can even meter with it once the lens data is entered. With a simple adapter it also works beautifully on Nikon Z, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, where focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy.

On mirrorless cameras, the bright constant aperture and smooth focus ring make the lens enjoyable for both stills and video. APS-C bodies extend the reach further, turning it into a capable long telephoto for distant subjects. With in-body stabilization, handheld shooting at the long end becomes far easier than on the film cameras it was designed for. This adds yet another dimension to an already capable piece of equipment.

The Series E 70-210mm f/4 is still valued because it offers outstanding image quality for its price, a bright constant aperture and the reliability of a well-made Japanese lens. Its rendering has a pleasing classic character that many photographers prefer over modern, highly corrected zooms. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

Whether you shoot Nikon film, adapt vintage lenses to mirrorless, or simply want an excellent telephoto zoom without spending a fortune, the Nikon Series E Zoom 70-210mm f/4 is a superb choice. Supplied with a lens cap, it is ready to use, and we recommend it as one of the best-value telephoto lenses in the classic Nikon lineup.
