The Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-S is a highly regarded manual-focus standard zoom from Nikon's Ai-S era, often praised as one of the best general-purpose zooms of its time. Covering moderate wide-angle to short telephoto, it was designed to be the one lens you could leave on the camera all day. Its combination of sharpness, compact size and macro capability has kept it popular with photographers for decades.

With a 16-element, 12-group design and Nikon Integrated Coating, the lens delivers crisp, contrasty images with natural, accurate colour. It performs particularly well at medium apertures, and its rendering at the 85–105mm end is pleasing for portraits. The macro mode at the 35mm setting allows remarkably close focusing for detail shots, product photos and flowers. Whether you shoot colour or black-and-white, its rendering translates beautifully into prints and high-resolution scans.

The lens uses Nikon's one-touch push-pull design, so zooming and focusing are handled by a single ring for fast, intuitive operation. The barrel is compact and well balanced, especially on smaller bodies such as the FM2, FE2 or FG. Build quality is solid with a metal mount, smooth damping and clear markings, typical of Nikon's Ai-S lenses. This thoughtful design makes it a reliable tool for everyday use as well as more demanding outings.

A 35-105mm range is ideal for travel, street photography, everyday snapshots, family events and environmental portraits. It lets you move from a wide street scene to a flattering head-and-shoulders portrait in an instant. Paired with a light film body, it makes a compact and very capable travel kit. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag.

Thanks to the Nikon F mount, this lens remains remarkably versatile. It mounts directly on Nikon manual-focus film bodies such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and F3, and on many Nikon DSLRs; higher-end models such as the D7000 series, D300 series, D700, D800 series and Df can even meter with it once the lens data is entered. With a simple adapter it also works beautifully on Nikon Z, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, where focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy.

On mirrorless cameras the lens is a versatile manual-focus option for both photography and video, and the macro mode adds a creative close-up tool. On APS-C bodies it becomes a useful standard-to-short-telephoto zoom that is especially well suited to portraits. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage. This adds yet another dimension to an already capable piece of equipment.

This lens is still valued because it offers excellent Nikkor image quality and reliable construction in a compact, practical zoom range. Its price remains very approachable, and its rendering carries a gentle classic character that suits both colour and black-and-white work. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

For anyone who wants a dependable all-round zoom for a classic Nikon or an adapted mirrorless camera, the Zoom-NIKKOR 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-S is an outstanding choice. Supplied with caps, it is ready to go, and we recommend it as one of the most useful lenses in the classic Nikon lineup. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography.
