The Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-S is a versatile manual-focus zoom that covers wide-angle, standard and short-telephoto focal lengths in a single lens. Developed in the Ai-S era, it was designed as an all-in-one solution for photographers who wanted to travel light without sacrificing Nikkor image quality. It remains a practical and enjoyable lens for everyday photography. Decades after its introduction, it still earns genuine respect from photographers who appreciate well-made classic gear.

Its 15-element, 12-group optical design with Nikon Integrated Coating produces sharp, well-saturated images with good contrast. Stopped down slightly, it performs very well across the range, and colour rendition has the classic Nikkor neutrality that makes it easy to match with other lenses. The macro mode adds useful close-up capability for flowers, details and small objects. As with most lenses, stopping down one or two stops from maximum aperture brings out its best edge sharpness and contrast.

The one-touch push-pull design combines zoom and focus in a single ring, making it quick to frame and focus with one hand. Build quality is solid, with a metal mount, smooth damping and clear distance markings. The Ai-S coupling ensures full functionality on Nikon manual-focus bodies, including program and shutter-priority modes on cameras such as the FA and FG.

With a 35-135mm range, this lens is ideal for travel, street photography, family events and general walk-around use. You can move from environmental scenes at 35mm to flattering portraits at 85–135mm without changing lenses. It is a perfect companion for photographers who want to keep their kit simple yet flexible. It encourages you to explore new subjects and perspectives, which is one of the joys of photography.

Thanks to the Nikon F mount, this lens remains remarkably versatile. It mounts directly on Nikon manual-focus film bodies such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and F3, and on many Nikon DSLRs; higher-end models such as the D7000 series, D300 series, D700, D800 series and Df can even meter with it once the lens data is entered. With a simple adapter it also works beautifully on Nikon Z, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, where focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy.

On mirrorless cameras the lens becomes a capable manual-focus all-rounder for both stills and video. Focus peaking makes the push-pull design quick to use, and on APS-C bodies the range shifts into a useful standard-to-telephoto equivalent. It is the kind of versatility that turns a piece of gear into a long-term companion rather than a short-term purchase. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage.

Lenses like this remain popular because they offer genuine Nikkor quality and durability in a convenient zoom range, at a far lower cost than modern alternatives. The rendering has an appealing classic character with smooth tonality that suits both colour and black-and-white work. In a market full of disposable products, well-made classic equipment like this offers lasting value.

If you want a single, well-built Nikon lens to cover most everyday situations on film or digital, the Zoom-NIKKOR 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-S is an excellent choice. We recommend it as a practical and reliable travel zoom with true Nikon heritage. It would make an excellent addition to your collection or a thoughtful gift for a fellow photography enthusiast.
