The smc PENTAX-M 50mm f/2 is a compact manual-focus standard lens from Pentax's celebrated M series, introduced in 1977 alongside the compact MX and ME bodies. It was designed to deliver Pentax optical quality in an exceptionally small, light package, and it remains one of the most approachable K-mount lenses ever made.

Optically, it uses a straightforward 5-element design with Pentax's renowned SMC multi-coating. The result is crisp, contrasty images with good color and strong flare resistance. Stopped down, it is impressively sharp across the frame, while wide open it offers pleasing subject separation with a natural, classic look.

Like all M-series lenses, it is beautifully made with a metal barrel, a smooth focusing ring, and a precise aperture ring with positive click stops. It is so slim and light that it barely adds bulk to a camera, which makes it a joy to carry all day.

The 50mm focal length is a timeless standard that renders scenes much as the eye sees them. The lens focuses to 0.45 m, close enough for tabletop shots and casual details, and its 49mm filter thread is shared with many other Pentax M lenses.

It is an excellent choice for street, travel, documentary, and everyday photography. On APS-C bodies it becomes a roughly 75mm-equivalent portrait lens, perfect for head-and-shoulders portraits with soft backgrounds.

The lens mounts directly on any Pentax K-mount camera, film or digital, including the K1000, MX, ME Super, and modern Pentax DSLRs, where it can be used with stop-down metering. With a simple K-mount adapter it also works beautifully on Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras.

Photographers still value this lens because it offers genuine Pentax SMC quality in a tiny, affordable package. It is a classic first lens for anyone starting out with film and a characterful, lightweight option for digital shooters.

If you want a small, sharp, and dependable 50mm with authentic Pentax craftsmanship, the smc PENTAX-M 50mm f/2 is an outstanding and highly practical choice.
