The Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 USM is a compact and lightweight standard zoom lens for the Canon EOS system. Introduced around the turn of the millennium as a kit lens for popular EOS film cameras, it covers a practical range from moderate wide-angle to short telephoto in a very small and light package.

Because it is a full-frame EF lens, it works on every Canon EOS SLR, from classic EOS film cameras to modern full-frame and APS-C digital bodies. On a full-frame camera it offers a classic 28-90mm range, while on an APS-C body it becomes an approximately 45-144mm equivalent short telephoto zoom, well suited to portraits and detail shots.

The 28mm end is wide enough for street scenes, travel snapshots, and indoor photography, while the 90mm end provides a natural perspective for head-and-shoulder portraits. This flexibility makes the lens an easy, do-everything companion for casual shooting and for photographers who prefer to carry just one lens.

Autofocus is driven by Canon's Micro USM ultrasonic motor, which provides quick and relatively quiet focusing compared with conventional DC motor designs of the same era. A simple AF/MF switch on the barrel allows you to fine-tune focus by hand whenever you want precise control.

Weighing only about 190 g, the lens keeps an EOS film body or digital camera remarkably light and balanced. It is a great match for lightweight film cameras like the EOS Kiss/Rebel series, making the combination ideal for travel, family events, and everyday film photography.

Image quality is pleasant and well balanced for a consumer zoom, especially when stopped down a little to around f/8. Colors are rendered in Canon's characteristic natural style, and the standard 58 mm filter thread makes it easy to add a protector, polarizer, or ND filter.

On Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras, the lens can be used with the EF-EOS R mount adapter while retaining autofocus and full electronic communication, giving it continued usefulness in today's systems.

If you want an inexpensive, light, and versatile everyday zoom for an EOS film camera or digital body, the EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 USM is an excellent practical choice. It is a simple way to get shooting immediately with a wide range of focal lengths at hand.
