The Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 is a well-regarded autofocus standard zoom from Nikon's early AF era. Covering a useful range from true wide angle to short telephoto, it was a premium alternative to the more basic kit zooms of its time.

Its 15-element optical design delivers good sharpness and contrast, particularly when stopped down, with the natural color rendering expected from Nikkor glass. Many users regard it as one of the better consumer zooms Nikon produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The lens is solidly built with a metal mount and a sturdy barrel. A traditional aperture ring is included, which allows use on older manual-exposure Nikon bodies and gives direct aperture control on mirrorless adapters.

A macro setting enables close-up photography, adding flexibility for flowers, details, and still life without the need for a dedicated macro lens. The 62mm filter thread accepts standard filters and hoods.

With its 28-85mm range, this lens is ideal for travel, landscapes, street photography, events, and portraits. 28mm captures wide scenes and interiors, while 85mm is a classic portrait length with flattering perspective.

It autofocuses on Nikon film and digital bodies with a built-in AF motor, including the F-801, F90, F100, F80, D200, D300, D7000-series, D700, and D750, and it can be used in manual focus on bodies without a motor. On mirrorless cameras, a Nikon F adapter makes it an easy and versatile manual zoom.

This lens is still appreciated as a solid, practical zoom with genuine Nikkor quality and an extended 28mm wide end that many cheaper zooms of its time lacked.

For photographers looking for a versatile, well-built standard zoom for a Nikon film or digital body, the AF Nikkor 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 is an excellent and dependable choice.
