The smc PENTAX-M 50mm f/1.7 is widely regarded as one of the best-value standard lenses ever produced for the K mount. Part of Pentax's compact M series introduced in 1977, it combines a fast f/1.7 aperture with the slim, lightweight design that made the M series so popular.

Its 6-element Gauss-type optical design is known for excellent sharpness, especially when stopped down slightly, and Pentax's SMC multi-coating provides strong contrast and natural color. Wide open, it offers attractive background blur and a gentle, classic rendering that suits both film and digital sensors.

Build quality is typical of Pentax's best era: a metal barrel, a smooth and well-damped focusing ring, and a crisp aperture ring with clear click stops. The lens is so compact that it makes any Pentax body feel balanced and easy to carry.

The bright f/1.7 aperture gives you a brighter viewfinder for manual focusing and makes low-light shooting much easier. A 0.45 m minimum focus and 49mm filter thread add to its everyday practicality.

This is a superb lens for street photography, travel, portraits, and general use. On APS-C cameras it becomes a fast short telephoto of about 75mm equivalent, ideal for portraits with smooth backgrounds.

It mounts directly on all Pentax K-mount film and digital cameras, from the K1000 and ME Super to modern Pentax DSLRs. With an inexpensive K-mount adapter, it is also an excellent manual lens for Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless bodies.

Many photographers consider the M 50mm f/1.7 the sweet spot of Pentax standard lenses: faster than the f/2, lighter and more affordable than the f/1.4, and optically excellent. It continues to be one of the most recommended lenses for anyone starting out with Pentax film.

If you want a fast, sharp, and compact standard lens with true Pentax quality, the smc PENTAX-M 50mm f/1.7 is a classic you will enjoy using for years.
