The Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 200mm f/4 is a classic M42 screw-mount telephoto prime from Asahi Optical. The Super-Multi-Coated designation marks the generation in which Pentax introduced its pioneering multi-layer coating, which greatly improved contrast and flare resistance compared with earlier single-coated Takumars.

Optically, the lens delivers sharp, contrasty images with rich, clean colour. The 200mm focal length compresses perspective and isolates subjects from their surroundings, producing striking results for portraits, wildlife and distant landscape details.

Like all Takumars, it is built to a very high mechanical standard. The all-metal barrel feels solid and durable, the focusing ring is smooth and precise, and a built-in retractable hood is always ready to help control flare.

The 200mm focal length is ideal for outdoor sports, birds and wildlife, stage performances and tight portraits. It provides genuine telephoto reach while remaining reasonably compact for a lens of its type.

On Spotmatic F and ES-series cameras, Super-Multi-Coated Takumars support open-aperture metering, while the Auto/Manual switch allows stop-down metering on other M42 bodies and makes the lens easy to use on adapters.

Thanks to the universal M42 screw mount, this lens can be used on a wide range of film cameras, including Pentax Spotmatic and other M42 bodies, and adapts very easily to modern mirrorless cameras such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Micro Four Thirds. Simple, inexpensive adapters are widely available, and the lens can even be used on Canon EOS DSLRs with an M42-EF adapter.

On APS-C mirrorless cameras, the lens offers an approximately 300mm equivalent field of view, making it an affordable and characterful long telephoto for nature and wildlife.

If you are looking for a well-built vintage telephoto with Pentax's renowned multi-coating and classic Takumar quality, the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 200mm f/4 is an excellent choice.
