Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Pentax Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 is a legendary M42 screw-mount standard prime from Asahi Optical. It was the standard lens on many Asahi Pentax Spotmatic cameras and is admired worldwide for its build quality and lovely rendering.

The lens delivers sharp results with a soft, gentle character wide open and excellent detail when stopped down. Its single-coated optics give a classic vintage look, with smooth, attractive bokeh.

Super-Takumar lenses are famous for their beautifully damped, silky focusing action and all-metal construction. Handling one is a reminder of the exceptional craftsmanship of 1960s Japanese optics.

The Auto/Manual switch lets you use automatic diaphragm operation on M42 cameras, or switch to manual for stop-down metering and for easy aperture control when using adapters.

The 55mm focal length provides a natural, slightly tighter perspective than 50mm, ideal for portraits, street photography, travel and still life.

The M42 mount adapts easily to almost any modern system, including Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Micro Four Thirds and Pentax K-mount, making this lens a versatile choice for digital shooters.

Today the Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 remains highly valued for its combination of craftsmanship, character and affordability, and it is one of the most recommended vintage lenses.

We recommend it to anyone exploring vintage lenses, whether on an M42 film camera or a modern mirrorless body.
