Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon D70 is the camera that brought digital SLR photography to a wide audience when it was introduced in 2004. Combining a 6.1-megapixel CCD sensor with genuine Nikon handling at an accessible price, it became one of the best-selling DSLRs of its time and is now regarded as a true classic of early digital photography.

Many photographers seek out the D70 today for the distinctive look of its CCD sensor. Images have rich, film-like colour and smooth tonal gradation that differ noticeably from modern CMOS cameras. For web use, social media and moderate print sizes the 6.1-megapixel files are entirely practical, and they have a character all of their own.

A standout feature is its electronic shutter design, which allows flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec and a top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. This makes daylight fill-flash at wide apertures far easier than on many later cameras, and it is a favourite tool for outdoor portrait work.

The body offers two command dials, a top status LCD, a bright pentaprism viewfinder and dependable 5-point autofocus with 3D Color Matrix Metering. Thanks to its built-in autofocus motor, the D70 autofocuses with screw-drive AF and AF-D Nikkor lenses as well as AF-S lenses, giving access to a huge and affordable range of Nikon optics.

If you are looking for a classic Nikon DSLR with genuine CCD character, high flash sync capability and proper manual control, the D70 is a rewarding and enjoyable camera for street, travel, portrait and everyday photography.
