The Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED is a versatile full-frame standard zoom that covers a five-times range from true wide-angle to medium telephoto. Introduced in 2003, it was one of Nikon's early lenses to combine Vibration Reduction with a broad everyday focal range. It has been a popular single-lens solution for travel and general photography.

The optical design of 15 elements in 13 groups includes two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements, helping reduce chromatic aberration and distortion across the range. Nikon's coatings provide good contrast and color fidelity. Stopped down slightly, the lens produces sharp, detailed images suitable for landscapes, portraits and events.

Vibration Reduction provides approximately three stops of image stabilization, allowing slower shutter speeds when shooting handheld. This is a real advantage in dim interiors, at dusk and at the telephoto end of the range. The Silent Wave Motor design provides quiet focus operation, and internal focusing keeps the front element from rotating.

Weighing about 575g, the lens is substantial yet manageable for a full day of shooting. The rounded seven-blade diaphragm helps render soft, natural backgrounds. Its 72mm filter thread accommodates a wide range of filters for landscape and creative photography.

The 24–120mm range is ideal for travel, events, landscapes, street photography and portraits, covering most everyday needs without changing lenses. On DX cameras, it provides an approximately 36–180mm equivalent field of view, which is a useful standard-to-telephoto range. Its versatility makes it a strong choice for photographers who prefer to carry a single lens.

As a G-type AF-S lens without an aperture ring, it is designed for Nikon digital SLRs and newer Nikon AF film cameras that control aperture from the body. It can be used on Nikon Z mirrorless cameras via the FTZ adapter. Adapters for other mirrorless systems should provide aperture control for G-type lenses.

A full-frame standard zoom with VR and a broad range remains a practical tool for many photographers. The 24-120mm VR offers a balance of reach, stabilization and image quality in one lens. It continues to be appreciated by Nikon users who value flexibility.

If you want a single versatile zoom that covers wide-angle to medium telephoto with image stabilization for your Nikon camera, the AF-S VR 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED is a sensible choice. It combines ED optics, VR and convenient coverage. It is a lens that suits travel, family and everyday photography.
