Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon FG is a compact and capable 35mm SLR introduced in 1982. Combining small size with advanced features, it offered Program, Aperture-Priority, and Manual exposure modes, making it one of the most versatile compact Nikon SLRs of its era.

Program mode sets both aperture and shutter speed automatically for point-and-shoot simplicity, while Aperture-Priority mode gives you depth-of-field control with automatic shutter speeds. Full Manual mode, with LED guidance in the viewfinder, allows complete creative control.

The FG was one of Nikon's first cameras to offer TTL off-the-film (OTF) flash metering, which measures flash light directly off the film during exposure for accurate results with compatible Nikon Speedlights.

Exposure compensation of ±2 EV allows easy adjustments for tricky lighting, and the clear LED display in the viewfinder shows the shutter speed being used. If the battery fails, the mechanical M90 setting still provides 1/90 sec.

Light and compact, the silver FG is pleasant to carry for travel and everyday shooting. Its small size pairs well with compact NIKKOR primes and Series E lenses, producing a portable but very capable film kit.

The camera uses the Nikon F mount and is compatible with Ai and Ai-s NIKKOR lenses as well as Series E lenses. Ai-s or Series E lenses are recommended to take full advantage of Program mode. The optional MD-14 motor drive adds motorized advance.

Today, the FG is valued as an affordable, feature-rich Nikon film SLR that is easy for beginners and enjoyable for experienced photographers. It offers modern conveniences while preserving the classic manual-focus experience.

If you want a lightweight Nikon SLR with automatic and manual exposure options and access to an enormous range of lenses, the Nikon FG is a smart and rewarding choice.
