The Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM is a compact, lightweight telephoto zoom that covers the full 35mm frame, making it suitable for both Canon EOS film cameras and digital SLRs. Designed as an affordable telephoto option, it offers a useful zoom range in a remarkably light package. Its continued popularity among photographers today is a clear testament to how well it was designed.

Its 13-element, 13-group optical design delivers sharp images with good contrast and natural Canon colour, especially when stopped down slightly. The longer end produces pleasing background separation for portraits and isolating subjects in nature and sports. Whether you shoot colour or black-and-white, its rendering translates beautifully into prints and high-resolution scans. The overall look is balanced and natural, making it easy to achieve pleasing results straight out of the camera.

Autofocus is driven by a USM (Ultrasonic Motor), providing quick and quiet focusing. At around 310 g, the lens is very light for a telephoto zoom, and its small 52mm filter size keeps filter costs down. It is easy to carry all day as a second lens alongside a standard zoom. This thoughtful design makes it a reliable tool for everyday use as well as more demanding outings.

The 55-200mm range is ideal for portraits, sports, school events, pets, wildlife and travel details. On APS-C cameras its reach extends to approximately 88–320mm equivalent, making it even more useful for distant subjects. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag. Whether you are photographing a family gathering, a weekend trip or a quiet walk around town, it is ready to capture the moment.

Built for the Canon EF mount, this lens works with Canon EOS film cameras and with every Canon EOS DSLR, from entry-level models to professional bodies, with full autofocus and electronic aperture control. On APS-C EOS models its field of view becomes approximately 1.6× the marked focal length. It can also be used on Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras via the Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter with full functionality, and on Sony E-mount bodies through a suitable electronic adapter, making it a sound long-term investment.

Because it covers full frame, the lens is equally at home on EOS film cameras, where it provides a classic 55-200mm telephoto range. On digital bodies, its light weight makes it a perfect travel telephoto. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage. This adds yet another dimension to an already capable piece of equipment.

This lens remains appreciated for offering useful telephoto reach, quiet USM autofocus and genuine Canon quality at a very affordable price. It is a simple way to expand an EOS kit without adding weight. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

For Canon EOS film or DSLR users looking for a compact, affordable telephoto zoom, the EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM is an excellent choice. We recommend it as a practical lens for travel, family and outdoor photography. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography. It is a choice that experienced photographers and newcomers alike can make with confidence.
