The Nikon AF NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED is a popular telephoto zoom lens for the Nikon F mount, offering long reach in a manageable size. Its inclusion of ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass set it apart from more basic telephoto zooms of its time, giving it a reputation for good image quality at an accessible price.

The 70-300mm range covers short telephoto to long telephoto, ideal for portraits, sports, wildlife, airshows, and travel details. On a DX-format digital camera, the field of view becomes approximately 105-450mm, providing substantial reach for distant subjects.

The ED glass element helps reduce chromatic aberration, preserving contrast and clean color, especially at the long end. Nine aperture blades contribute to smooth, natural background blur.

As a D-type lens, it transmits distance information to compatible Nikon cameras, improving the accuracy of 3D Matrix Metering and flash exposure. The 62 mm filter thread accepts common filters.

Autofocus is driven by the camera body's screw-drive motor, so the lens autofocuses on Nikon AF film SLRs and on FX and DX DSLRs with a built-in AF motor, such as the D7000 series, D300 series, and full-frame models. On bodies without an AF motor, it can be used with manual focus.

Because it has an aperture ring, the lens is also compatible with many older Nikon film cameras, and it can be adapted to mirrorless cameras using a Nikon F adapter for manual-focus use with full aperture control.

Lenses like this remain a favorite for Nikon film photographers and DSLR users who want an affordable, capable telephoto without the size and cost of professional optics.

If you need a versatile telephoto zoom for your Nikon system that delivers reliable results for nature, sports, and travel, the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED is a strong and economical choice.
