The Nikon Micro-NIKKOR-P Auto 55mm f/3.5 is a classic manual-focus macro lens with an outstanding reputation for sharpness and precision. This example features Ai coupling, allowing full-aperture metering on Ai-compatible Nikon cameras and making it far more versatile across Nikon's camera lineup than an unconverted Non-Ai lens.

The Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 is renowned for very high resolution, minimal distortion and a flat field of focus. These qualities make it superb for macro photography and for precise reproduction tasks such as copying documents, photographing artwork and digitising film negatives and slides.

The lens focuses continuously down to half life-size (1:2) and reaches 1:1 with the M2 extension ring. A compensating aperture design helps maintain correct exposure as the lens extends, and reproduction ratio markings make it easy to work at a chosen magnification.

Built with Nikon's classic all-metal construction, the lens features a long, smooth focusing helicoid for very fine adjustments. It is solid and durable, reflecting the quality of Nikon's manual-focus era.

With Ai coupling, the lens works with full-aperture metering on cameras such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA, F3 and later Nikon film SLRs, as well as higher-end Nikon DSLRs with an Ai coupling tab. This makes it an easy lens to use across many generations of Nikon bodies.

The Nikon F mount offers outstanding compatibility across decades of cameras, and this lens can also be adapted to modern mirrorless bodies such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z (via an F-to-Z adapter) and Micro Four Thirds. On mirrorless cameras, focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy for both stills and video.

Beyond close-up work, it is also an exceptionally sharp standard lens for landscapes, products and everyday photography. It remains one of the best-value vintage macro lenses for both film and digital photographers.

If you are looking for a precise, well-built macro lens with broad Nikon compatibility, the Micro-NIKKOR-P Auto 55mm f/3.5 with Ai coupling is an excellent choice.
