The Nikon NIKKOR-H Auto 28mm f/3.5 is a classic manual-focus wide-angle lens from Nikon's early F-mount era. The 'H' designation follows Nikon's traditional letter code for a 6-element optical design, and the lens reflects the precise, all-metal construction that made vintage Nikkors famous.

Optically, the lens produces crisp, well-defined images with a gentle, classic rendering. At f/3.5 it is sharp in the center, and stopping down to f/8 or f/11 delivers excellent detail across the frame, making it a strong performer for landscapes and architecture.

The 28mm focal length is one of the most versatile wide-angle choices, wide enough for landscapes and interiors while still natural enough for street and documentary photography. Its moderate perspective allows you to include context while keeping subjects recognisable.

The lens is built from metal with a smooth focusing helicoid and a distinctive scalloped focusing grip. Clear distance and depth-of-field scales make zone focusing quick and practical, a technique well suited to street photography.

As a Non-Ai lens, it is best suited to cameras designed for pre-Ai lenses, such as the Nikon F, F2 (with non-Ai finders), Nikkormat FTn and Nikomat EL, and to bodies with a fold-up meter coupling lever such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and Df. It should not be mounted on cameras with a fixed Ai coupling tab unless it has been Ai-converted.

The Nikon F mount offers outstanding compatibility across decades of cameras, and this lens can also be adapted to modern mirrorless bodies such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z (via an F-to-Z adapter) and Micro Four Thirds. On mirrorless cameras, focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy for both stills and video.

Classic Nikkor-H lenses are valued today for their solid build, timeless look and dependable optical quality. They offer a vintage character that many photographers enjoy on both film and digital cameras.

If you are looking for a well-made vintage wide-angle lens with classic Nikon craftsmanship, the NIKKOR-H Auto 28mm f/3.5 is an excellent choice for landscapes, travel and street photography.
