The Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-70mm f/3.5 Ai-S is a high-quality manual-focus standard zoom with a constant f/3.5 maximum aperture. It was one of Nikon's well-regarded professional-grade zooms of its era and is still known for delivering image quality that rivals many prime lenses in its range.

Optically, this lens is noted for strong sharpness and contrast, with the natural, faithful color rendering associated with Nikkor glass. The constant f/3.5 aperture means exposure stays consistent throughout the zoom range, which is particularly convenient with manual metering and flash.

Construction is classic Nikon: a metal barrel, smooth focusing and zoom rings, and the precise feel of a lens built to last. The two-ring design allows independent control of zoom and focus, a layout many photographers prefer for careful framing.

A macro setting adds close-up capability, extending the lens's usefulness to details, flowers, and still life. The 62mm filter thread is a common Nikon size.

With its 35-70mm range, the lens covers the most-used focal lengths for street, travel, documentary, and portrait photography. It is an excellent single-lens solution for everyday shooting on a film body.

As an Ai-S lens, it works with a wide range of Nikon bodies, from the FM, FE, and F3 to cameras like the F100 and digital SLRs such as the D7000-series, D700, D750, and D800, which support metering with manual lenses. It also adapts easily to mirrorless systems, including Nikon Z via the FTZ adapter.

This lens remains popular because it delivers optical quality approaching prime lenses with the flexibility of a zoom, all in a robust manual-focus package.

If you want a versatile, high-quality manual zoom for your Nikon film camera or mirrorless system, the Zoom-NIKKOR 35-70mm f/3.5 Ai-S is a superb and rewarding choice.
