The Canon FD 200mm f/4 is a compact manual-focus telephoto prime from Canon's New FD lens series. It offers a classic 200mm field of view in a surprisingly portable package, and it is a dependable lens for photographers who want genuine telephoto reach without bulk.

Optically, the lens delivers sharp, contrasty images with natural colour. The 200mm focal length compresses perspective and separates subjects cleanly from their backgrounds, producing attractive results for portraits, wildlife and distant landscape details.

Compared with earlier FD designs, the New FD 200mm f/4 is noticeably shorter and lighter, with a close focusing distance of around 1.5 m. A built-in retractable lens hood is always ready to help reduce flare, and the focusing ring is smooth and well-damped.

The lens features the New FD bayonet mount, which is quick and convenient to attach, and an aperture ring with an 'A' setting for automatic exposure on program and shutter-priority Canon bodies such as the A-1 and AE-1 Program.

Beyond Canon FD film cameras such as the AE-1, AE-1 Program, A-1, F-1 and T70, this lens adapts easily to modern mirrorless cameras including Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Micro Four Thirds using a simple FD adapter. With focus peaking and magnification, manual focusing is precise and enjoyable, and the lens is equally useful for stills and video.

On APS-C and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, the effective field of view becomes even longer, turning this lens into an affordable and capable long telephoto for wildlife, sports and nature photography.

The FD 200mm f/4 remains popular because it combines solid optical performance, a compact design and Canon's quality construction. It is one of the most practical vintage telephoto lenses to carry and use.

If you are looking for a compact, sharp telephoto prime for Canon FD film cameras or adapted mirrorless use, the Canon FD 200mm f/4 is an excellent and rewarding choice.
