The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II is a compact, lightweight standard zoom designed for Nikon DX-format digital SLRs. Introduced alongside the Nikon D40, it was a refined version of Nikon's original 18-55mm kit lens. It covers wide-angle to short telephoto, equivalent to about 27–82.5mm.

The optical design of 7 elements in 5 groups includes an ED glass element and a hybrid aspherical element, helping deliver sharp images with low chromatic aberration and well-controlled distortion. Images show good contrast and natural Nikon color. Stopped down a little, the lens is capable of crisp, detailed results.

Weighing only about 205g, this is one of the lightest Nikon standard zooms, making it ideal for travel and everyday carry. The Silent Wave Motor provides quiet, responsive autofocus. Its simple, compact design keeps the camera easy to handle and unobtrusive.

A minimum focusing distance of 0.28m allows close-up shots of food, flowers and details. The 52mm filter size is common and affordable, so filters and accessories are easy to find. The rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth background rendering.

This lens is well suited for travel, landscapes, family photos, street photography and portraits. The wide end captures interiors and broad scenes, while the longer end provides a pleasing portrait perspective. It is a practical everyday lens that covers most common shooting situations.

As an AF-S lens with its own focus motor, it autofocuses on all Nikon DX digital SLRs, including entry-level bodies such as the D40, D40X, D60, D3000 series and D5000 series. It can also be used on Nikon Z mirrorless cameras with the FTZ adapter. On FX bodies, it can be used in DX crop mode.

Compact standard zooms remain valuable because they provide dependable image quality with minimal size and weight. This lens makes an excellent replacement kit lens, a lightweight travel option or a backup lens. It delivers reliable Nikon performance at an accessible price.

If you need a light, compact and dependable standard zoom for your Nikon DX camera, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II ED is a great choice. It offers ED optics, quiet autofocus and versatile everyday coverage. It is a lens that makes it easy to take your camera everywhere.
