Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon D40X is a compact, lightweight digital SLR introduced in 2007 as a higher-resolution version of the popular D40. It features a 10.2-megapixel DX-format CCD sensor that produces detailed images with rich, natural color. This kit includes the AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II lens, ready for everyday photography.

The CCD sensor gives images the pleasing color and tonality that many photographers associate with Nikon's CCD-era cameras. With a base ISO of 100, the D40X delivers clean files in good light, and 3D Color Matrix Metering II provides consistent, accurate exposures. Images are well suited to prints and online sharing.

The D40X is one of the smallest and lightest Nikon digital SLRs, weighing about 495g, making it an excellent travel companion. Its large 2.5-inch LCD displays clear, graphical shooting information that helps beginners understand settings. Continuous shooting at about 3 frames per second captures everyday action well.

The camera offers scene modes for quick results as well as Program, Aperture-Priority, Shutter-Priority and Manual modes for full creative control. A fast 1/200 second flash sync supports fill-flash photography outdoors. In-camera retouch functions allow simple editing without a computer.

The included AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II lens covers a range equivalent to about 27–82.5mm, ideal for landscapes, family photos, travel and portraits. Its ED glass and hybrid aspherical elements help deliver sharp, clear images. At only about 205g, it keeps the whole kit light and compact.

The D40X uses the Nikon F mount and autofocuses with AF-S and AF-I lenses that have built-in focus motors, including the wide range of AF-S DX and FX Nikkors. Older AF and AF-D lenses can be mounted but will focus manually, as the camera has no internal focus motor. This still gives plenty of autofocus lens options to grow your kit.

The D40X remains popular among photographers who appreciate its compact size, intuitive operation and CCD image character. It is an excellent camera for beginners, students and anyone wanting a lightweight Nikon kit for travel. It also works well as a second body for experienced shooters.

If you are looking for a compact, easy-to-use digital SLR kit with pleasing CCD image quality, the Nikon D40X with the AF-S DX 18-55mm II ED lens is an excellent choice. It offers dependable Nikon performance in a travel-friendly package. It is a complete kit ready for everyday photography.
