Used Camera Specialty Store Comment – Why We Recommend This Lens

The Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-S is an excellent choice for photographers who appreciate the mechanical feel, versatility, and classic optical character of Nikon's manual-focus NIKKOR lenses.

Its greatest advantage is the extremely useful 35-135mm focal-length range. A single lens covers moderate wide-angle, standard, short telephoto, and medium telephoto perspectives, making it suitable for a remarkably broad range of subjects. At 35mm it works well for travel, street scenes, landscapes, and everyday photography. Around 50-70mm it provides a natural perspective for general shooting, while the 105-135mm range is especially useful for portraits, details, and isolating subjects. Nikon itself described this range as suitable for everything from snapshots and candid photography to portraiture.

Another appealing feature is its classic one-touch zoom design. Focusing is performed by rotating the large control ring, while focal length is changed by sliding the same ring forward or backward. This allows the photographer to move between focusing and composition quickly without changing hand position. For photographers who enjoy the tactile experience of vintage manual-focus equipment, this mechanical interface is one of the lens's most satisfying characteristics.

The built-in macro focusing function adds another level of versatility. At the 135mm setting, the lens can focus as close as approximately 0.4m and achieve a maximum reproduction ratio of approximately 1:3.8. This is useful for photographing flowers, small objects, product details, food, and other close-up subjects without carrying a separate macro lens.

Optically, the lens uses a substantial 15-element, 14-group construction. Its variable f/3.5-4.5 maximum aperture is relatively bright for a vintage zoom covering this range, while the 62mm filter thread is convenient for commonly available filters.

We especially recommend this lens to photographers who want to experience the traditional Nikon manual-focus system without carrying several prime lenses. The combination of a practical zoom range, dedicated macro capability, mechanical Ai-S construction, and one-touch operation makes it an interesting all-purpose lens from the classic NIKKOR era.

It is also a compelling option for collectors and photographers building a vintage Nikon F-mount system. Rather than being a simple telephoto zoom, the 35-135mm range can effectively serve as a single walk-around lens for travel, portraits, street photography, and everyday shooting.

For photographers who value manual focusing and classic Nikon engineering, the Zoom-NIKKOR 35-135mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-S offers an enjoyable combination of versatility, functionality, and vintage NIKKOR character.
