The Canon FD Macro 50mm f/3.5 is a classic manual-focus macro lens designed for close-up photography on Canon FD-mount cameras. It offers the natural perspective of a standard 50mm lens with the ability to focus very close, reaching half life-size magnification on its own.

Optically, the lens uses a simple, well-corrected 4-element design optimized for close distances, producing crisp detail and flat-field performance that is ideal for copying documents, photographing small objects, and capturing intricate textures. It also performs very well at normal distances.

Construction reflects Canon's FD-era quality, with a precise, long-throw focusing helicoid that allows accurate focusing at high magnification. The relatively modest f/3.5 aperture keeps the lens compact and is well suited to the small apertures commonly used in macro work.

The lens reaches 0.5x magnification by itself and can reach 1:1 life-size with Canon's matching FD extension tube. This makes it a flexible tool for nature, product, and documentation work.

Use cases include flowers, insects, jewelry, coins, stamps, food, and small product photography, as well as film scanning and copy work with a digital camera. Because it is also a capable standard lens, it doubles as an everyday 50mm.

The lens mounts on all Canon FD-mount film cameras, including the AE-1, AE-1 Program, A-1, F-1, and T-series bodies. With an FD adapter, it works very well on mirrorless systems such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Micro Four Thirds, where focus magnification makes precise macro focusing easy.

Dedicated macro lenses from the film era are valued for their sharpness, flat field, and long focusing travel, qualities that remain useful today for both stills and video.

If you are looking for an affordable and capable macro lens with Canon FD craftsmanship, the Canon FD Macro 50mm f/3.5 is an excellent choice for close-up photography and everyday use alike.
