The Nikon AF NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G is a lightweight telephoto zoom that gives Nikon users an affordable route into long-lens photography. Designed for both film and digital Nikon cameras, it offers a generous 4.3× zoom range in a compact body, making it a popular choice for travel, family events and nature photography. Decades after its introduction, it still earns genuine respect from photographers who appreciate well-made classic gear.

Its 13-element, 9-group optical design produces sharp, natural-looking images, particularly when stopped down to f/8 in the 70–200mm range. Nine rounded aperture blades help create smooth, pleasing background blur, which is useful for portraits and isolating subjects from busy backgrounds. As with most lenses, stopping down one or two stops from maximum aperture brings out its best edge sharpness and contrast.

At around 425 g, the lens is notably light for a 300mm zoom, so it is easy to carry all day. As a G-type lens it has no aperture ring, with aperture controlled directly from the camera. Autofocus is driven by the camera's built-in motor, and focusing is quick on compatible bodies. Its controls fall naturally under the fingers, making it comfortable to use during long shooting sessions.

The 70-300mm range covers portraits, sports, wildlife, birds, school events, airshows and travel details. Landscape photographers will also enjoy the ability to compress distant scenery and pick out details across the horizon. It encourages you to explore new subjects and perspectives, which is one of the joys of photography. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag.

Thanks to the Nikon F mount, this lens works with Nikon autofocus film SLRs and with Nikon DSLRs. Note that it uses the camera's built-in focus motor (screw-drive AF), so it autofocuses on bodies with a built-in motor such as the D7000 series, D200/D300 series, D600/D700/D800 series and most autofocus film bodies; on entry-level models without a motor (e.g. D3000/D5000 series) it can still be used with manual focus. It can also be mounted on Nikon Z cameras via the FTZ adapter as a manual-focus lens with full electronic aperture control.

On DX-format Nikon DSLRs, the lens provides an equivalent range of roughly 105–450mm, giving substantial reach for wildlife and sports. Its light weight makes it a convenient second lens to carry alongside a standard kit zoom. It is the kind of versatility that turns a piece of gear into a long-term companion rather than a short-term purchase. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage.

This lens remains popular because it offers long reach, low weight and genuine Nikkor quality at a very accessible price. It is a straightforward way to expand a Nikon kit without adding bulk. In a market full of disposable products, well-made classic equipment like this offers lasting value. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality.

For Nikon photographers seeking an affordable, lightweight telephoto zoom, the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G is an excellent choice. Supplied with caps, it is ready to go, and we recommend it as a practical lens for everyday telephoto photography. It would make an excellent addition to your collection or a thoughtful gift for a fellow photography enthusiast. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography.
