The Nikon NIKKOR-H Auto 28mm f/3.5 is a classic wide-angle prime from the early Nikon F era, one of the lenses that established Nikon's reputation for high-quality optics in the 1960s. The "H" designation indicates its six-element construction, following Nikon's traditional naming system. It is a compact, beautifully made lens with genuine historical appeal. Its continued popularity among photographers today is a clear testament to how well it was designed.

Its 6-element, 6-group retrofocus design delivers sharp, contrasty images with natural colour and well-controlled distortion. Stopped down to f/8, it produces crisp results across the frame, ideal for landscapes and architecture. Its rendering has a classic character that suits both colour and black-and-white photography. Whether you shoot colour or black-and-white, its rendering translates beautifully into prints and high-resolution scans.

Build quality is excellent, with an all-metal barrel, smooth focus action and a precise aperture ring. The lens is compact and light, making it easy to carry, and its clearly engraved depth-of-field scale is perfect for zone focusing in street photography. This thoughtful design makes it a reliable tool for everyday use as well as more demanding outings.

A 28mm focal length is a favourite for street photography, travel, landscapes, interiors and environmental portraits. It provides a wide but natural perspective that lets you tell stories with context while keeping distortion modest. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag. Whether you are photographing a family gathering, a weekend trip or a quiet walk around town, it is ready to capture the moment.

As a Non-Ai Nikkor, this lens is best used on cameras designed for pre-Ai lenses, such as the Nikon F, F2 (with a non-Ai finder), Nikkormat FT/FTn and similar bodies, or on the Nikon Df with its metering coupling lever folded up. Please note that Non-Ai lenses should not be forced onto Ai-only bodies, as this can damage the camera's coupling ring. On mirrorless cameras, however, it is completely trouble-free: with a simple Nikon F adapter it works beautifully on Sony E, Nikon Z, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds bodies, with focus peaking making manual focus quick and precise.

On APS-C mirrorless cameras the lens provides a field of view of around 42mm equivalent, close to a classic standard lens. On full-frame mirrorless cameras it retains its wide 28mm view, and the small size keeps the setup light and discreet. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage. This adds yet another dimension to an already capable piece of equipment.

The NIKKOR-H 28mm f/3.5 is still valued as a compact, durable and characterful wide-angle lens with a strong place in Nikon history. It offers an affordable way to enjoy classic Nikkor craftsmanship. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

For Nikon collectors, film photographers using Non-Ai compatible bodies, or mirrorless users seeking a classic wide-angle, the NIKKOR-H Auto 28mm f/3.5 is an excellent choice. Supplied with caps, we recommend it as a timeless lens for everyday photography. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography. It is a choice that experienced photographers and newcomers alike can make with confidence.
