The Nikon NIKKOR-N Auto 24mm f/2.8 is a historically important wide-angle lens: it was the first Nikkor to use Nikon's Close-Range Correction (CRC) system, a floating-element design that maintains excellent image quality from close distances to infinity. The "N" in its name indicates its nine-element construction, following Nikon's classic naming convention. It is a landmark lens of the Nikon F era.

Optically, the lens delivers crisp, contrasty images with well-controlled distortion for a wide-angle of its time. Thanks to CRC, sharpness holds up remarkably well when focusing close, allowing dramatic near-far compositions. The bright f/2.8 aperture makes it practical in lower light and provides a bright viewfinder image. Whether you shoot colour or black-and-white, its rendering translates beautifully into prints and high-resolution scans.

Build quality is classic Nikon: an all-metal barrel, smooth focus ring, precise click-stop aperture ring and finely engraved scales. Its compact size makes it a pleasure to carry, and the depth-of-field scale is especially useful for zone focusing on the street. This thoughtful design makes it a reliable tool for everyday use as well as more demanding outings.

A 24mm focal length is ideal for landscapes, architecture, interiors, street photography and environmental portraits. It allows you to capture expansive scenes and to work close to your subject for dynamic perspectives. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag. Whether you are photographing a family gathering, a weekend trip or a quiet walk around town, it is ready to capture the moment.

As a Non-Ai Nikkor, this lens is best used on cameras designed for pre-Ai lenses, such as the Nikon F, F2 (with a non-Ai finder), Nikkormat FT/FTn and similar bodies, or on the Nikon Df with its metering coupling lever folded up. Please note that Non-Ai lenses should not be forced onto Ai-only bodies, as this can damage the camera's coupling ring. On mirrorless cameras, however, it is completely trouble-free: with a simple Nikon F adapter it works beautifully on Sony E, Nikon Z, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds bodies, with focus peaking making manual focus quick and precise.

On APS-C mirrorless cameras the lens becomes a moderate wide to standard lens of around 36mm equivalent, a classic street photography focal length. On full-frame mirrorless bodies it retains its true 24mm wide-angle view. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage. This adds yet another dimension to an already capable piece of equipment.

The NIKKOR-N 24mm f/2.8 is still prized as a compact, beautifully made wide-angle with genuine historical significance. Its CRC design was so successful that it influenced many later Nikkor wide-angles. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

For Nikon collectors, film shooters with Non-Ai compatible bodies, or mirrorless users seeking a classic wide-angle, the NIKKOR-N Auto 24mm f/2.8 is a wonderful choice. Supplied with caps, we recommend it as a piece of Nikon history that still performs beautifully. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography. It is a choice that experienced photographers and newcomers alike can make with confidence.
