Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 Non-Ai is a classic fast standard prime from Nikon's pre-Ai era. Fast 50mm Nikkors were the premium standard lenses of their time, and this f/1.4 remains highly regarded by photographers who love vintage glass.

Wide open, the lens delivers a soft, luminous look with smooth bokeh, perfect for atmospheric portraits and low-light scenes. Stopped down, it becomes crisp and contrasty, with the honest, natural rendering typical of classic Nikkors.

Its all-metal construction reflects Nikon's high manufacturing standards. The focusing ring turns smoothly and the aperture ring clicks positively, giving a precise, tactile shooting experience.

The f/1.4 maximum aperture gives a very bright viewfinder, easing manual focus, and lets you shoot handheld in dim light where slower lenses struggle.

This lens is excellent for portraits, street photography, indoor available-light work and night scenes. The 50mm focal length is versatile and natural for everyday documentary shooting.

As a non-Ai lens, it is best used on Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat FTn and similar bodies, or on cameras with a folding Ai tab. On mirrorless cameras such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds, it adapts easily and produces beautiful vintage rendering.

Today, fast vintage Nikkors like this are prized for their character and build quality, offering a distinctive look that modern lenses rarely reproduce.

We recommend this lens to vintage Nikon shooters, collectors and mirrorless users seeking a characterful fast fifty with authentic Nikon heritage.
