Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon NIKKOR 50mm f/2 Ai is a classic manual-focus standard prime from Nikon's Ai lens series. Known for its reliability and excellent sharpness, it was a standard lens for many Nikon SLRs and remains one of the most practical Nikkor primes.

Its six-element optical formula is highly regarded for crisp detail and good contrast, particularly from f/2.8 onward. Colors are natural and well balanced, and out-of-focus areas render smoothly.

The lens is compact and solidly built in metal, with a smooth focus ring and a precise aperture ring. It balances perfectly on Nikon film bodies like the FM, FE, FM2 and F3.

With Ai coupling, it provides full-aperture metering on Nikon's manual-focus SLRs and on many Nikon DSLRs. The close-focus distance of 0.45m is useful for portraits and table-top subjects.

The 50mm perspective is ideal for street photography, travel, portraits, and everyday documentary work. It is a lens that can be kept on the camera at all times.

On mirrorless cameras, the lens adapts easily to Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds with a Nikon F adapter. On APS-C, it becomes a pleasing short portrait lens.

Today the NIKKOR 50mm f/2 Ai remains valued for its outstanding value, compact build, and the classic look of Nikon's manual-focus era.

We recommend this lens to anyone building a Nikon film kit, and to mirrorless users who want a sharp, reliable vintage standard prime.
