The Nikon NIKKOR-S Auto 50mm f/1.4 is a classic fast standard lens from Nikon's early F-mount era. Introduced in the early 1960s alongside the legendary Nikon F, it was one of Nikon's flagship standard lenses and remains highly regarded for its build quality and character.

The 'S' in its name follows Nikon's traditional naming code, indicating seven ('Septem') optical elements. This seven-element, six-group design delivers sharp, detailed images when stopped down and a soft, glowing look with smooth bokeh when shot wide open at f/1.4.

The fast f/1.4 aperture makes it ideal for low-light shooting, portraits with shallow depth of field, and atmospheric street photography. Its 50mm focal length offers a natural perspective that suits almost any subject.

Build quality is superb: an all-metal barrel, a scalloped metal focusing ring, and engraved markings reflect the precision craftsmanship of Nippon Kogaku in the 1960s. The lens has a satisfying, substantial feel in the hand.

As a Non-Ai lens, it is designed for Nikon F, F2 (with non-Ai finders), Nikkormat FTn, and other pre-Ai cameras that use the meter coupling prong. It should not be mounted directly on many later Ai-type bodies without Ai conversion, as this may damage the camera's metering tab.

On mirrorless cameras, the lens is easy and safe to use with a simple Nikon F adapter. Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and Micro Four Thirds users can enjoy its vintage rendering with focus peaking and magnification for precise manual focus.

Early Nikkor lenses like this have become sought after by collectors and photographers who appreciate their historical significance and distinctive optical character, which differs from modern clinical lenses.

If you own a classic Nikon film camera or want a characterful fast 50mm to adapt to your mirrorless system, the NIKKOR-S Auto 50mm f/1.4 is a beautiful and historically important choice.
