Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Asahi Pentax Spotmatic is one of the most iconic 35mm SLRs in history. Introduced in 1964, it was among the first cameras to bring through-the-lens metering to a wide audience, and it became a bestseller around the world. It is paired here with the legendary Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 standard lens.

The Spotmatic uses stop-down TTL metering: you press the metering switch, the lens stops down, and the match-needle meter shows correct exposure. It is a simple, accurate system that teaches the fundamentals of exposure, while the mechanical shutter operates from 1 second to 1/1000 sec plus Bulb.

Build quality is superb. The compact, all-metal body feels balanced and refined, the film advance is smooth, and the controls are logical. The battery powers only the light meter, so the shutter continues to work even without a battery.

The Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 is one of the most beloved vintage lenses ever made. It offers excellent sharpness, smooth focusing, and a warm, classic rendering with attractive background blur. Its Auto/Manual switch makes it ideal for stop-down metering on the Spotmatic.

This outfit is excellent for street photography, travel, portraits, and everyday shooting. It is also a perfect learning camera for anyone who wants to understand manual exposure and enjoy a hands-on film experience.

The Spotmatic uses the universal M42 screw mount, opening up a vast range of Takumar and third-party lenses. The Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 can also be adapted to modern mirrorless cameras with a simple M42 adapter.

Spotmatic cameras and Takumar lenses remain hugely popular for their elegant design, durability, and the beautiful rendering they produce on film. They are classics that are still a pleasure to use every day.

If you are looking for a timeless SLR outfit with a legendary lens, the Pentax Spotmatic with Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 is a wonderful choice for both beginners and experienced film photographers.
