The Nikon NIKKOR-S.C Auto 50mm f/1.4 is a classic fast standard lens from Nikon's Non-Ai era. The 'S' denotes a 7-element optical design, and the 'C' indicates Nikon's multi-coating, which improves contrast and flare resistance. It is a highly regarded lens that combines speed, sharpness and beautiful vintage character.

Optically, the lens produces a lovely, gentle glow at f/1.4 that gives portraits and low-light scenes a distinctive, atmospheric look. Stopping down quickly brings excellent sharpness and contrast, making it a versatile performer from wide open to f/8 and beyond.

The fast f/1.4 aperture allows shallow depth of field for beautiful subject separation, as well as handheld shooting in dim interiors and at night. It also gives a bright viewfinder image, which makes manual focusing easier.

The lens is built with Nikon's classic all-metal construction, with a smooth focusing helicoid and a distinctive scalloped focusing grip. It feels solid and precise, reflecting the quality that made vintage Nikkors famous.

As a Non-Ai lens, it is best suited to cameras designed for pre-Ai lenses, such as the Nikon F, F2 (with non-Ai finders), Nikkormat FTn and Nikomat EL, and to bodies with a fold-up meter coupling lever such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and Df. It should not be mounted on cameras with a fixed Ai coupling tab unless it has been Ai-converted.

The Nikon F mount offers outstanding compatibility across decades of cameras, and this lens can also be adapted to modern mirrorless bodies such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z (via an F-to-Z adapter) and Micro Four Thirds. On mirrorless cameras, focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy for both stills and video.

On APS-C mirrorless cameras, it becomes an approximately 75mm equivalent portrait lens with a fast aperture, making it a favourite for portraits and video with a vintage look.

If you are looking for a classic fast Nikkor with genuine character and solid build, the NIKKOR-S.C Auto 50mm f/1.4 is an excellent choice for film and adapted digital photography.
