Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon Micro-NIKKOR-P Auto 55mm f/3.5 is a classic macro lens from Nikon's early F-mount era. Micro-Nikkor lenses earned a legendary reputation for sharpness and flat-field accuracy, and this model laid the foundation for that reputation.

Optically, it is designed to render fine detail with minimal distortion, making it superb for close-up subjects, copy work, and documentation. It is also exceptionally sharp at normal shooting distances.

The lens features an all-metal barrel with a long, smooth focusing helicoid for precise adjustment. Its deeply recessed front element acts as a natural lens hood, helping preserve contrast.

Without accessories it focuses to half life-size (1:2), and with an appropriate extension tube it can reach 1:1. The "P" designation indicates its five-element optical formula in Nikon's classic naming system.

This lens is ideal for flowers, insects, product photography, coins and stamps, documents, and digitizing film. It also serves as a fine standard lens for everyday photography.

As a non-Ai lens, it is best suited to Nikon F, F2, Nikkormat FTn and similar bodies, or cameras with a folding Ai tab. It adapts easily to Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, where focus peaking makes macro focusing simple.

Today the Micro-Nikkor-P remains highly valued for its outstanding optical precision and its historic place in Nikon's lens lineup, all at an accessible price.

We recommend it to macro enthusiasts, film digitizers and vintage Nikon fans seeking an exceptionally sharp close-up lens.
