The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED is a compact, lightweight telephoto zoom designed specifically for Nikon's DX-format digital SLRs. Often paired with the 18-55mm kit lens, it completes a versatile two-lens setup covering wide-angle to telephoto, and it has long been one of Nikon's most popular telephoto lenses for DSLR users. Decades after its introduction, it still earns genuine respect from photographers who appreciate well-made classic gear.

Its 13-element, 9-group optical design includes an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element to reduce chromatic aberration, helping deliver sharp, clean images with good contrast. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth background blur, making the lens a good choice for portraits as well as distant subjects. As with most lenses, stopping down one or two stops from maximum aperture brings out its best edge sharpness and contrast.

With a built-in Silent Wave Motor, autofocus is quiet and works on every Nikon DSLR, including entry-level models without an in-body focus motor. At around 255 g, the lens is very light and compact, so it is easy to carry in a small bag. M/A mode allows quick manual focus override. Its controls fall naturally under the fingers, making it comfortable to use during long shooting sessions.

The 55-200mm range, equivalent to roughly 82–300mm in 35mm terms, is ideal for portraits, sports, school events, pets, wildlife and travel details. It lets you capture subjects at a distance and create pleasing compression in landscapes and cityscapes. It encourages you to explore new subjects and perspectives, which is one of the joys of photography. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag.

This lens uses the Nikon F mount with a built-in Silent Wave Motor, so it autofocuses on every Nikon DSLR, including entry-level models without an in-body focus motor such as the D3000 and D5000 series. It is designed for Nikon's DX (APS-C) format, where its focal range gives an equivalent field of view about 1.5× longer. It can also be used on Nikon Z mirrorless cameras through the FTZ / FTZ II adapter with full autofocus support, keeping it useful well into the future.

For DSLR beginners, this lens is a natural next step after a kit zoom, opening up telephoto photography with minimal weight and cost. It also makes an excellent travel companion thanks to its small size. It is the kind of versatility that turns a piece of gear into a long-term companion rather than a short-term purchase. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage.

The AF-S DX 55-200mm remains popular because it provides genuine Nikkor quality, fast and quiet autofocus, and useful telephoto reach in a remarkably light package, all at an approachable price. In a market full of disposable products, well-made classic equipment like this offers lasting value. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality.

For Nikon DX DSLR users looking to extend their reach without adding bulk, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED is an excellent choice. Supplied with a cap, we recommend it as a practical, reliable telephoto zoom for everyday photography. It would make an excellent addition to your collection or a thoughtful gift for a fellow photography enthusiast.
