The Nikon NIKKOR 300mm f/4.5 Ai is a classic manual-focus super-telephoto prime that brought long-lens photography within reach of serious amateurs and professionals alike. Part of Nikon's Ai lens lineup, it is known for solid optical performance, robust construction and a manageable size for a 300mm lens. It remains a capable tool for wildlife, sports and nature photography.

Its 6-element, 5-group optical design with Nikon Integrated Coating delivers sharp, contrasty images with good colour, particularly when stopped down to f/8. The 300mm focal length provides strong perspective compression and allows you to fill the frame with distant subjects, producing clean backgrounds that make subjects stand out. Whether you shoot colour or black-and-white, its rendering translates beautifully into prints and high-resolution scans.

Build quality is excellent, with an all-metal barrel, smooth focus ring and precise aperture control. A built-in telescopic hood helps protect against flare, and the rotating tripod collar allows quick switching between horizontal and vertical framing when shooting from a tripod or monopod. This thoughtful design makes it a reliable tool for everyday use as well as more demanding outings.

This lens is ideal for wildlife, birds, motorsports, airshows, outdoor sports and distant landscape details. It is also useful for candid photography at events where approaching the subject is not possible, and for dramatic compressed cityscapes. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag. Whether you are photographing a family gathering, a weekend trip or a quiet walk around town, it is ready to capture the moment.

Thanks to the Nikon F mount, this lens remains remarkably versatile. It mounts directly on Nikon manual-focus film bodies such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and F3, and on many Nikon DSLRs; higher-end models such as the D7000 series, D300 series, D700, D800 series and Df can even meter with it once the lens data is entered. With a simple adapter it also works beautifully on Nikon Z, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, where focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy.

On APS-C and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras the effective focal length grows dramatically, providing long super-telephoto reach for birds and wildlife. Combined with in-body stabilization on many modern bodies, it can be used handheld in good light, though a monopod or tripod is recommended for the best results. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage.

The NIKKOR 300mm f/4.5 Ai is still valued for offering genuine Nikkor super-telephoto performance and professional build at a fraction of the cost of modern long lenses. Its classic metal construction will last for many years of use. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

For Nikon film shooters, wildlife enthusiasts, or mirrorless users seeking an affordable long lens, the NIKKOR 300mm f/4.5 Ai is an excellent choice. Supplied with caps, it is ready for use, and we recommend it as a reliable and rewarding telephoto. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography. It is a choice that experienced photographers and newcomers alike can make with confidence.
