Professional Camera Store Comment

The Nikon NIKKOR 105mm f/1.8 Ai-S is one of Nikon's most legendary manual focus portrait lenses and is highly sought after by photographers and collectors worldwide. Produced in limited numbers compared to many classic NIKKOR lenses, it has become increasingly difficult to find in excellent condition, making it one of the most desirable vintage Nikon lenses available today.

Its exceptionally bright f/1.8 maximum aperture allows photographers to create stunning images with remarkable subject isolation and beautifully smooth background blur. The combination of the 105mm focal length and ultra-wide aperture produces an elegant compression effect that flatters facial features while creating an impressive three-dimensional rendering. Portraits have a natural, cinematic appearance with soft transitions between the focused subject and the background.

Optically, this lens delivers outstanding center sharpness even at wide apertures while maintaining excellent contrast and faithful color reproduction. Stopping down slightly reveals exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness, making the lens equally suitable for landscape, architecture, and detailed telephoto photography. Nikon's renowned optical engineering ensures minimal chromatic aberration and impressive image quality that continues to rival many modern lenses.

The long focus throw and precisely engineered all-metal focusing mechanism provide an exceptionally smooth and accurate manual focusing experience. This level of mechanical craftsmanship is one of the reasons why classic Ai-S NIKKOR lenses remain highly respected among professional photographers, videographers, and vintage lens enthusiasts.

Beyond portrait photography, the 105mm f/1.8 excels in concerts, weddings, stage performances, street photography, documentary work, and available-light shooting. Its bright aperture allows lower ISO settings and faster shutter speeds in challenging lighting conditions while preserving excellent image quality.

The lens is also an outstanding choice for modern mirrorless cameras when adapted to Nikon Z, Sony E, Canon RF, Leica L, Fujifilm X, and other mirrorless systems. Many photographers specifically seek this lens for its unique rendering, smooth focus operation, and timeless optical character that is difficult to replicate with modern autofocus designs.

The Nikon NIKKOR 105mm f/1.8 Ai-S represents the pinnacle of Nikon's classic manual focus era. Combining outstanding optical performance, premium mechanical construction, and a distinctive image rendering, it remains one of the finest portrait lenses Nikon has ever produced and an exceptional addition to any serious photography collection.
