The Nikon NIKKOR 200mm f/4 Ai-S is a compact and well-built manual-focus telephoto prime from Nikon's late manual-focus era. It offers genuine 200mm reach in a slim, relatively light package, and it is admired for its sharpness, contrast and durable all-metal construction.

Optically, the lens produces crisp, contrasty images with natural colour, and its 200mm focal length compresses perspective beautifully. Backgrounds are rendered smoothly, making it well suited to portraits, wildlife, sports and isolating landscape details.

The lens features a built-in retractable lens hood, a smooth and precise focusing ring, and Nikon's classic knurled metal grip. Its 52mm filter thread is shared with many other Nikkor lenses of its era, keeping filter costs down.

As an Ai-S lens, it offers full-aperture metering on a wide range of Nikon cameras, including classic film bodies such as the FM2, FE2, FA, F3 and F4, as well as modern autofocus film cameras. Higher-end Nikon DSLRs with an Ai coupling tab can meter with it once the lens data is entered.

The Nikon F mount offers outstanding compatibility across decades of cameras, and this lens can also be adapted to modern mirrorless bodies such as Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z (via an F-to-Z adapter) and Micro Four Thirds. On mirrorless cameras, focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy for both stills and video.

On APS-C mirrorless cameras, the effective focal length becomes approximately 300mm, giving you a compact long telephoto for wildlife, birds and sports without the bulk of modern zooms.

The Nikkor 200mm f/4 Ai-S remains a favourite because it combines excellent optical performance, outstanding build quality and a compact form at an accessible level.

If you are looking for a sharp, rugged and portable telephoto prime for Nikon film cameras or adapted digital use, the NIKKOR 200mm f/4 Ai-S is an excellent choice.
