The Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II (Model A16) is a highly regarded fast standard zoom designed for APS-C digital SLRs. It belongs to Tamron's SP (Super Performance) line and offers a constant f/2.8 aperture across a 17-50mm range, equivalent to about 25.5-75mm on a Nikon DX camera.

The A16 has long been praised for its sharpness, which compares very favorably with much more expensive camera-brand lenses. LD (Low Dispersion) and aspherical elements help control chromatic aberration and distortion, producing crisp, clean images with good contrast.

The constant f/2.8 aperture is the lens's key advantage. It allows faster shutter speeds in low light, better subject separation, and consistent exposure throughout the zoom range, making it a big step up from typical variable-aperture kit lenses.

Internal focusing means the front element does not rotate, which is convenient when using polarizing or graduated filters. The lens focuses as close as 0.27 m, allowing detailed close-ups of food, flowers, and small objects.

This lens is ideal for events, weddings, travel, street, landscapes, portraits, and indoor photography. Its versatile range and bright aperture make it a reliable all-in-one lens for a wide variety of situations.

This Nikon-mount version is designed for Nikon DX digital SLRs. Note that versions without a built-in AF motor require a camera body with a built-in focus motor (such as the D90, D7000-series, D200, or D300) for autofocus, while versions with a built-in motor also autofocus on entry-level bodies. It can be used on Nikon Z cameras with the FTZ adapter, with autofocus depending on the lens version.

Many photographers still consider the A16 one of the best values in APS-C standard zooms, delivering professional-style f/2.8 performance at an accessible level.

If you want a fast, sharp, and versatile standard zoom for your Nikon DX camera, the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II is an excellent upgrade from a kit lens.
