The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED is widely regarded as one of the best kit lenses Nikon has ever produced. Introduced with the Nikon D70 in 2004, it offers a slightly longer range and faster aperture than typical kit zooms. Its combination of quality, build and versatility has kept it popular among Nikon DX users.

The lens features 15 elements in 13 groups, including three ED glass elements and one aspherical element, a sophisticated design for a standard zoom. This yields sharp, contrasty images with well-controlled chromatic aberration. Color rendering is natural and pleasing, with the classic Nikon look.

Build quality is notably higher than many kit lenses, with a metal mount and smooth, well-damped zoom and focus rings. The Silent Wave Motor provides fast and quiet autofocus, and the internal focusing design keeps the lens length constant during focusing. Full-time manual focus override allows quick adjustments without switching modes.

The 18–70mm range is equivalent to about 27–105mm, giving you extra reach for portraits compared with standard 18-55mm lenses. The slightly brighter f/3.5–4.5 aperture helps in lower light. A 67mm filter thread accommodates a wide range of filters.

This lens is ideal for travel, landscapes, events, portraits and everyday photography. The wide end captures expansive scenes and interiors, while the longer end is great for flattering portraits and details. It is a dependable all-round lens for any occasion.

As an AF-S lens with its own focus motor, it autofocuses on all Nikon DX digital SLRs, including entry-level models without an in-body AF motor. It can also be used on Nikon Z mirrorless cameras via the FTZ adapter. On FX bodies it is used in DX crop mode.

The 18-70mm remains appreciated because it offers optical quality and build that exceed typical kit lenses at a very accessible price. It is an excellent upgrade from a basic 18-55mm or a dependable everyday lens in its own right. Many photographers consider it a hidden gem among Nikon DX zooms.

If you are looking for a high-quality, versatile standard zoom for your Nikon DX camera, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is an outstanding choice. It offers ED optics, solid construction and a useful extended range. It is a lens that can handle almost any everyday photographic need.
