Professional Camera Store's Recommendation

The Nikon NIKKOR 200mm f/4 Ai is a compact, well-built manual-focus telephoto prime from Nikon's Ai lineup. It provides genuine telephoto reach in a remarkably manageable size, making it a popular choice for Nikon film photographers.

Optically, it delivers sharp, contrasty images with natural color. The prime design gives clean performance and pleasant background blur, ideal for isolating subjects from distracting backgrounds.

Typical of Nikon's Ai era, the lens features a solid metal barrel, smooth focusing and a firm, precise aperture ring. A built-in sliding hood helps control flare and keeps the front element protected.

With full-aperture Ai metering, it works seamlessly with Nikon manual-focus SLRs such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and F3, as well as with many Nikon DSLRs that support Ai lenses.

The 200mm focal length is excellent for wildlife, sports, distant landscapes, tight portraits and candid photography. It compresses perspective dramatically and lets you capture subjects you cannot approach closely.

On mirrorless cameras, the lens adapts easily to Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds using a Nikon F adapter. On APS-C, it provides a 300mm-equivalent field of view, and on Micro Four Thirds about 400mm.

Today this lens is valued for offering classic Nikon telephoto quality at a reasonable size and price, and it remains a practical tool for both film and digital shooters.

We recommend this lens to anyone wanting a reliable, characterful telephoto prime for nature, sports and portrait work.
