The Canon EOS 40D is a semi-professional 10.1-megapixel digital SLR that earned a strong reputation for speed, build quality and reliability. Released in 2007, it was aimed at serious enthusiasts and working photographers, offering a magnesium alloy body, a fast 6.5 frames-per-second drive and a bright pentaprism viewfinder.

Its 10.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC III processor produce clean images with natural colour and good dynamic range, recorded as 14-bit RAW files for flexible post-processing. The modest pixel count yields large photosites and pleasing tonal quality, and the files are more than adequate for professional-quality prints.

The 40D is built to a high standard, with a magnesium alloy body, a solid grip and Canon's quick control dial on the rear. The large, bright pentaprism viewfinder with approximately 0.95× magnification makes composition and focusing a pleasure, and three custom shooting modes let you store your favourite settings for instant recall.

All nine autofocus points are cross-type, with a high-precision center point for fast lenses, providing confident focusing for sports, wildlife and action. Combined with 6.5 fps continuous shooting and a 1/8000 sec top shutter speed, the 40D is a very capable action camera even by today's standards.

The camera accepts all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, from compact primes to professional L-series telephotos, and it is an excellent body for adapted manual-focus lenses as well. Live View with magnification makes it easy to focus vintage or macro lenses accurately.

The 40D excels at wildlife, sports, events, portraits and travel photography. Its robust build and responsive handling make it a dependable tool for demanding shooting, while its straightforward controls also make it a great step up for enthusiasts moving beyond entry-level cameras.

Many photographers continue to choose the 40D for its professional feel, excellent ergonomics and reliable performance at an accessible price. It offers the kind of build quality and control layout found on higher-end cameras, combined with proven Canon image quality.

If you want a rugged, responsive Canon DSLR with professional handling and fast performance, the EOS 40D is a superb choice. It is a camera that inspires confidence and pairs beautifully with the extensive Canon EF lens lineup.
