The Nikon Series E Zoom 36-72mm f/3.5 is a compact manual-focus standard zoom from Nikon's Series E line, created to give photographers an affordable, lightweight alternative to carrying several prime lenses. Designed for cameras such as the Nikon EM, FG and FM series, it has earned a reputation as a dependable and pleasantly sharp everyday lens. Its continued popularity among photographers today is a clear testament to how well it was designed.

Its 8-element, 8-group optical design delivers clean, contrasty images with natural colour, and the constant f/3.5 maximum aperture keeps exposure consistent throughout the zoom range. Performance is especially good at medium apertures, where it produces crisp results suitable for both colour and black-and-white film. Whether you shoot colour or black-and-white, its rendering translates beautifully into prints and high-resolution scans.

Unlike Nikon's push-pull designs, the 36-72mm uses separate zoom and focus rings, letting you adjust framing without disturbing focus. The lens is compact and light, balancing nicely on smaller bodies, and its Ai-S coupling ensures full compatibility with program and shutter-priority modes on cameras like the FG and FA. This thoughtful design makes it a reliable tool for everyday use as well as more demanding outings.

The 36-72mm range covers moderate wide-angle through short telephoto, making it ideal for street photography, travel, everyday snapshots and environmental portraits. It is a great 'one lens' solution for photographers who want to travel light without sacrificing flexibility. Its flexibility means it can easily become one of the most frequently used items in your camera bag. Whether you are photographing a family gathering, a weekend trip or a quiet walk around town, it is ready to capture the moment.

Thanks to the Nikon F mount, this lens remains remarkably versatile. It mounts directly on Nikon manual-focus film bodies such as the FM, FE, FM2, FE2, FA and F3, and on many Nikon DSLRs; higher-end models such as the D7000 series, D300 series, D700, D800 series and Df can even meter with it once the lens data is entered. With a simple adapter it also works beautifully on Nikon Z, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, where focus peaking and magnification make precise manual focusing easy.

On mirrorless cameras the separate zoom and focus rings make the lens pleasant for video, and its compact size keeps the setup small. On APS-C bodies it becomes a useful normal-to-short-telephoto zoom, well suited to portraits and detail shots. For photographers who use both film and digital, this flexibility is a genuine advantage. This adds yet another dimension to an already capable piece of equipment.

The Series E 36-72mm f/3.5 is still appreciated today because it delivers solid image quality and reliability in a small, affordable package. Its classic rendering and simple handling make it an enjoyable lens for photographers learning manual focus or building a vintage kit. Its enduring appeal across generations of photographers speaks volumes about its quality. Many photographers who try it once end up keeping it in their kit for years.

For anyone wanting a compact, budget-friendly standard zoom for a classic Nikon or an adapted mirrorless camera, the Nikon Series E Zoom 36-72mm f/3.5 is an excellent choice. We recommend it as a practical everyday lens with genuine Nikon heritage. We are confident it will bring you many years of enjoyable and creative photography. It is a choice that experienced photographers and newcomers alike can make with confidence.
