The Nikon D70s is an updated version of the legendary D70, one of the cameras that brought digital SLR photography to a wide audience. Introduced in 2005, it added a larger 2.0-inch LCD monitor, an improved battery and a remote release terminal while keeping the proven 6.1-megapixel CCD sensor. It remains a respected and characterful classic of early digital photography.

The 6.1-megapixel DX-format CCD sensor is the reason many photographers seek out the D70s today. Its images have a distinctive, film-like colour quality with rich tones and smooth gradation that differ noticeably from modern CMOS sensors. For web use, social media and moderate print sizes, the resolution is entirely practical, and the files have a character all of their own.

One of the D70s's most unusual and useful features is its combination of mechanical and electronic shuttering, which allows a top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec and flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec. This makes it a favourite for outdoor fill-flash photography, letting you balance flash with bright daylight at wide apertures in a way many later cameras cannot.

The body offers a well-shaped grip (on this example the grip rubber is deteriorated - see Appearance), two command dials, a top status LCD and a bright pentaprism viewfinder. The 5-point Multi-CAM 900 autofocus system is simple and dependable, and 3D Color Matrix Metering helps produce consistent exposures. Images are recorded as RAW, JPEG or both onto CompactFlash cards.

Thanks to its built-in autofocus motor, the D70s autofocuses with screw-drive AF and AF-D Nikkor lenses as well as AF-S lenses, giving access to a vast and affordable range of Nikon optics. Classic manual-focus Nikkors can also be mounted for manual exposure shooting, making the D70s a great body for exploring different lenses.

The D70s is ideal for photographers interested in early digital aesthetics, CCD colour, or an affordable introduction to the Nikon system. It is well suited to street photography, travel, portraits and daylight flash work, and makes a fun and rewarding camera for anyone who enjoys a more deliberate style of shooting.

Its reputation for distinctive colour, high flash sync capability and solid Nikon handling has made the D70s something of a cult favourite among digital photographers. It offers a unique look that is difficult to replicate in software, combined with the full manual control and lens compatibility of a proper DSLR.

If you are looking for a classic Nikon digital SLR with genuine CCD character and practical everyday performance, the D70s is a rewarding choice. It is a camera with personality, and an excellent partner for both modern and vintage Nikon F-mount lenses.
