The Nikon Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/3.5 Ai is one of the most respected close-up lenses of the manual-focus era. Its design is famous for exceptional sharpness and very flat field performance, which made it a standard tool for copy work, scientific photography, and detailed close-ups.

Optically, this lens is renowned for its crisp resolution from edge to edge, low distortion, and clean, neutral rendering. The deeply recessed front element acts as a built-in hood, helping maintain contrast. It is equally impressive at normal distances, so it also serves as a very sharp standard lens.

The construction is classic Nikon: an all-metal barrel, a long-throw helicoid that allows extremely precise focusing, and a firm, positive aperture ring. The extended focusing travel gives fine control that is ideal for macro work.

Without accessories it focuses to half life-size (1:2). Paired with the dedicated PK-13 extension tube, it reaches 1:1 life-size magnification. The Ai coupling provides full-aperture metering on Nikon's manual-focus SLRs and on compatible Nikon DSLRs.

Use cases include flowers, insects, product shots, stamps and coins, documents, film digitizing, and detailed still life. Its natural 55mm perspective also makes it a capable everyday lens for landscapes and street scenes.

The lens adapts readily to Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Micro Four Thirds bodies via a Nikon F adapter. With focus peaking and magnified view on mirrorless cameras, precise macro focusing becomes even easier, and it is popular for digitizing negatives.

Decades after its introduction, the Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/3.5 remains valued for delivering professional macro sharpness at an accessible price. Its reputation for optical precision means it continues to be chosen by both film and digital photographers.

We recommend this lens to anyone interested in close-up photography or seeking an exceptionally sharp standard prime. It is a true classic that rewards careful work with outstanding detail.
